Teaching in Suzhou

This is a government project called “Foreign Teachers on Campus.” Currently 35 foreign teachers are involved in this project. The main purpose of this project is to give students a real English learning environment, improve their English proficiency and enhance their cultural awareness.

In China, there are nine years of compulsory education for students. All the public schools are under the education bureau’s supervision. The education bureau requests U-Learn to recruit ESL teachers for its public schools. All of the schools are well facilitated. In every classroom, there is a computer and projector. In each class foreign teachers can get the Chinese teacher’s support. Foreign teachers will be treated as members of teaching staff and will be invited to the teachers’ workshop every week. Foreign teachers can attend the demo class when they start teaching at school.

Teaching materials and resources are provided by the school and are targeted to the age of the students being taught. Materials follow the Chinese national school curriculum and focus on developing all four skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing. Teachers are encouraged to adapt and supplement the materials where need be to ensure classes are engaging and interesting.
