Longyan enjoys rich tourism resources, which include three national class-AAAA tourism zones (Yongding Tulou, Guanzhai Mt., Longkong Cave), one national park (Guanzhai Mt.), one national historic and cultural city (Changting), three national forest parks (Longyan National Forest Park, Shanghang West Putuo National Forest Park, Zhangping Tiantaishan National Forest Park), two national natural reserves (Meihua Mt. and Liangye Mt.), and twelve national cultural heritage sites. Among the eight top tourism areas, there are two in Longyan—Yongding Tulou, and Gutian Congress Site.
In year 2007, the tourism was growing rapidly,thanks to the promotion, exploration of scenic spots, development of souvenir, improvement of facilities and services. There were 5.003 million tourists in 2007, increased by 9.9%. Among which, 1,056,000 tourists stayed overnight, a 10% increase; 11,500 tourists from foreign countries, an increase of 69.1%. The total revenue for tourism was 5.02 billion RMB, increased by 10%.
Longyan City is a division composed of parts of the ancient Ting Zhou and Longyan Zhou. As it is located in the west of Fujian, and Fujian is usually called “Min”, it is usually called “Minxi” (literally “Western Fujian”).
Minxi is soil embodying long history and rich culture. It’s the headstream of the three major rivers in Fujian—Minjiang River, Jiulongjiang River, and Tingjiang River. This soil used to be the paradise of “ancient Fujianese” in the ancient times. It’s the ancestral home for “Minyue people” and the seat and core region of the capital of “Nanhai Kingdom”. It’s also the ancestral home for Hakka people and Heluo people. Hakka culture, Heluo culture and local culture merged here, the charm of which attracted many cultural personalities in the history like Zhang Jiuling, Li Gang, Zhu Xi, Wang Yangming, Song Ci, Wen Tianxiang, Xu Xiake, Ji Xiaolan and etc. It also turned out notable figures in culture and arts like Shang Guan Zhou, Huang Sheng, Hua Yan and etc.
Longyan is a world-known motherland for Hakka people and overseas Chinese. Minxi is one of the major motherland and inhabited area for Hakka people. Five counties of the seven divisions of the City are inhabited by Hakka people, the population of which covers 75 percent of the total population. The Hakka culture, architecture, folk customs in Minxi are of long history, richness, colorfulness, and unique characteristics. Tingzhou, China’s Famous Historic Town, is regarded as the “Hakka Capital”, while the Tingjiang River is regarded as “Hakka Mother River”, and the Li’s Ancestral Temple, the construction of which began in the 16th year of Emperor Daoguang of Qing Dynasty, is regarded as the “Base Camp for Li Clans around South-east Asia”. Nowadays, there are over 1.2 million overseas Chinese, compatriots in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan who are originally from Longyan, among them, 300,000 Hakka people in Taiwan. In November 2000, the 16th World Hakka Congress was held in Longyan, over 3,500 representatives around the world attended the congress.
Longyan is a famous revolutionary area in China. Longyan used to be a major part of the former central Soviet area. Minxi is a “Red Soil” famous in Chinese revolutionary history. It’s one of the two places where “the red flag never fell”. Here, the revolutionists like Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Chen Yi and so on left their footprints. It’s an important birthplace of Maoism as Mao Zedong wrote many of his great works here. The famous Gutian Congress (the 9th CPC Congress of the 4th Red Army) was held here, which established the creed for the construction of party and army.
Introduction
Minxi Vocational and Technical College ('MXDX'), founded in 1983, was established to provide much-needed skilled professionals for various key industries. The original focus was in construction related fields but the college has expanded its scope and high quality expertise into many different fields, emphasizing practical skills training. The success of its programs is evidenced by over 95% employment rate of MXDX graduates.
MXDX is strategically located in Longyan, Fujian. Fujian has a long history of trade and manufacturing and is the gateway for Taiwan-China cooperation investments. Longyan is a key transportation and commodities hub linking Fujian with the nearby Provinces of Guangdong and Jiangxi. Longyan enjoys the benefits from recent construction of new highways, fast train rails and a modern airport.
The 650 acre campus is lushly landscaped and includes 43 specialized laboratories and training rooms, e.g. chemistry and electronics laboratories, mold and other machinery workshops, computer labs and a large horticultural base for the training of landscaping and biology professionals. There are also many athletic fields for sports and physical education activities as well as swimming pools, basketball and volleyball courts.
MXDX has over 400 highly skilled faculty including professors, associate professors, lecturers, assistant teachers and visiting fellows. Many of the teachers have double certifications, i.e. regular graduate diplomas and additional practical skills certifications. In addition the college employs over 50 experienced local business men to enhance the 'practical' nature of the teaching methodology.
The college has twelve departments and over 40 majors. Over 7000 students attend classes full time and an additional 2000 adult students take part in self-study and vocational programs. The college focuses on current market needs for skilled workers through the following departments: Business Administration, Chemical Engineering, Computer Sciences, Civil Engineering & Construction, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Foreign Languages, Mechanical Engineering, Resources Engineering, Self-Study, Tourism and Vocational Studies.
In the next few years Min Xi College will undergo a planned expansion in order to meet the needs of Fujian's growing economy. New buildings, laboratories and facilities will be added to the existing high quality base to carry MXDX into the forefront of higher education for the 21st Century.
