Introduction of Qiqihar
Qiqihar is a major city in the Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China. It has 895,000 inhabitants. These are mainly Han Chinese and the resident minorities are, among others, Manchu, Daur, and Mongolians. Close to Qiqihar are numerous wetlands and the Zhalong Nature Reserve, famous in China for being home to numerous red-crowned cranes. 


      

The population is about 6.011 million, where 1,438,550 (January 1, 2005) people live in the city. The area is 4,310 km2; 42,469 km2 including suburbs. It is about 146 m above sea level and the annual rainfall is 415 mm. Average temperature is 3.2°C (January –25.7°C, July 22.8°C). Qiqihar is a principal Chinese city, the second largest in Heilongjiang Province and the 13th largest in China (based on total population).

Qiqihar is one of the oldest cities in the northeast of China and was founded in 1691. From 1931 until 1945 it was an important military base for the Japanese control of northeastern China, going by the name Tsitsihar.

Qiqihar is a civilized ancient city with more than 300 years of history, which was first built in the 38 th year of Kangxi's Reign of Qing Dynasty (1699). Qiqihar is a Dawur word, which means border or natural pasture. Qiqihar has the honorary names of Longsha and Pukui , etc. Heilongjiang Martial domiciled in Qiqihar City in the 38 th year of Kangxi's Reign (1699), hence, Qiqihar had been the capital of Heilongjiang Province for as long as 285 years.

Qiqihar is located in the middle and lower reaches of Nenjiang River and the hinterland of Songnen Plain, which is adjacent to the Greater Xing'an Mountains and Hulunbeir Prairie, with a flat topography, abundant water and grass, and the predominant natural conditions have provided a wonderful life cradle for the multiplying and living of the human being. Qiqihar is the partial tone of the Dawur word Qichahali, which means border town or natural pasture; Qiqihar was first built at Pukui Village, thus called as Pukui as well. 

Pukui is the partial tone of the Dawur word or Mongolian word Bugu , which means giant , wrestling ground and auspicious . Dawur language and Mongolian are belonged to the same language family and have many similarities. In a word, Qiqihar and Pukui have the meanings of natural pasture and auspicious. 

Qiqihar City is the second largest city of Heilongjiang Province, which is the economic and cultural center of the western part of Heilongjiang. Qiqihar was designated to be one of the 13 largest cities of China by State Council in 1984. Qiqihar administers 7 districts, 8 counties and one city, with a total area of 42,400 k㎡. There are totally 156 towns and townships and 1361 villages in Qiqihar City with the total population of 5.61 million, including the urban population of 1.438 million, covering 35 nationalities of Han, Mongolian, Man, Huis, Korean, Elunchun, Ewenke and Dawur, etc.

Qiqihar Medical University (QMU), located in the hometown of world-famous red-crowned cranes, stands by the scenic Nenjiang River and is a regular university of Heilongjiang Province. Founded in 1946, the University has a history of more than 65 years.

Currently, QMU boasts a staff of 3,489 including 856 professors as well as associate professors and more than 66.8% teachers with Master Degrees. The number of enrollment is more than 15,000. The undergraduate education program offers 25 specialties and disciplinary orientations covering the full spectrum of medicine as well as four other disciplines: science, engineering, law and managing.

The University possesses 26 research institutes and academic associations, in which there are the Post-doctoral Research Workstations, the Research and Development Lab and the Key Constructing Lab of Provincial Universities. In the past five years, the University has undertaken 458 scientific research projects at different levels. More than 2,000 academic papers, works and textbooks have been issued and published according to 2008 and 2009 annual statistical report on technology fruits, the technology fruits registration number of our university amounts to 53 and 68.

The Library of QMU has a collection of 800,000 volumes of books and provides CD-ROM Retrieval System and Electronic Reading Section. 3 Journals are sponsored by the University— Journal of Qiqihar Medical University, Chinese Modern Nursing, and Nervous Diseases and Mental Hygiene, which are issued domestically and abroad. Chinese Modern Nursing is the national publication and the others are the provincial publication. The headquarters of the Periodical Press is located in Beijing. Besides, the University has already established the campus network system with 3, 970 kinds of online teaching resources.

The University has 9 affiliated hospitals and 27 teaching and training hospitals. The beds in the affiliated hospital can meet the needs of clinical teaching and practice to the fullest extent. 

QMU lays great emphasis on exchange and cooperation, and has established friendly interscholastic relationships with many universities nationally, regionally and internationally, such as Union Medical University, Kanazawa Medical University of Japan, Russia Chita State Medical College, Our Lady of Fatima University of the Philippines, Emilio Aguinaldo College of the Philippines, University of Cape Town and Assumption University of Thailand etc,. Meanwhile, the University has recruited foreign teachers and enrolled international students, some of whom are from South Asia. Teachers and students of QMU have been sent to go to the Philippines for further study.
