Brief Introduction of HUE
History of HUE
The Hubei University of Education ( HUE ) was founded in 1931, and since then has been a leader in teacher education. Today, our goal remains the same as always – to provide excellent professional development programs for Chinese teachers.
As the needs of teachers have changed and technology has evolved, so has the university adapted. HUE participated in an early distance education pilot program for primary and middle school teachers, and today has more than thirty-five learning sites throughout Hubei Province .
Three international journals are published by the university: Training and Research (also known as the Journal of the Hubei University of Education), The Class Advisor, and The Study of Chinese, Mathematics, and English.
Campus Details
HUE is in the city of Wuhan , the capital of Hubei Province in central China , and its 20,000 students come from across the country.
The university has two campuses: the main Optics Valley campus and the downtown Yuemachang campus.
The Optics Valley campus is in the East Lake Hi-Tech Development Zone, China’s biggest photoelectron information industry center, often referred to as the Optical Valley of Wuhan. This campus has an area of 1700 mu (equivalent to 113 hectares or 280 acres) and the existing buildings have a total floor space of about 28,000 square meters.
The downtown Yuemachang campus is situated at the foot of Snake Hill, and is close to several sites of historic and cultural interest, such as the Yellow Crane Tower , the Hubei Provincial Library, and the Wuchang Uprising Memorial to the revolution of 1911. The university’s facilities include computer rooms, language laboratories, e-reading rooms, multimedia classrooms, and more than 30 experimental laboratories to meet diverse teaching and study needs.
The university library has a collection of some 700,000 books, magazines, and journals as well as an up-to-date research network system. Additionally, HUE is part of the inter-university research network – the China Education and Research Network (CERNET).
HUE was among the first institutions with access to the Internet, and today, all campus offices, classrooms, and dormitories have Internet access.
Junior College and Undergraduate Programs
The university has thirteen departments which together offer courses in sixty-one disciplines at both the undergraduate and junior college level.
Two independent schools, each providing their own specialized study programs, are attached to HUE : the Information College and the Wuhan University of Language and Cultural Studies.
The School of Continuing Education , located on the HUE campus, offers part-time courses for adults throughout China who wish to obtain a diploma or degree. These continuing education courses are made available either through correspondence or distance education.
Finally, there are the thirty-five distributed learning sites mentioned above.
Specialization in Education
HUE also has four provincial-level teacher-education centers that provide training and supervision of educators, research the basic education needs of Hubei province, and offer in-service opportunities for professional teachers.
· Hubei Provincial Centre of School Continuing Education– is responsible for the continuing education for all of Hubei ’s 480,000 primary and middle school teachers. It is under the joint supervision of both HUE and the Hubei Provincial Department of Education (PDE).
·Hubei Institute of School Teaching Research (HISTR) – is responsible for primary and middle school teaching research and teaching affairs administration across Hubei Province . It is under the joint supervision of HUE and the Hubei PDE.
· Hubei Provincial Training Center of School Leadership – has three responsibilities: first, to train educational administrators, supervisors, and school headmasters in primary and secondary schools; second, to organize and conduct the training of vice mayors and vice county heads in charge of local education; and third, to offer professional guidance for the training of school administrators. Founded in 1987, it is under the joint supervision of HUE and the Hubei PDE.
· Hubei Provincial Center for Teacher Qualification Accreditation – is responsible for accreditation of all the teachers at all levels in Hubei Province (i.e. kinder gardens, primary and middle schools, colleges and universities). This Center was founded in 2003 and is managed by both HUE and the Hubei PDE.
Staff and Faculty
HUE has many outstanding teachers who are receiving national grants from the State Council or provincial grants from the Hubei Government. Some of the staff have received the Zeng Xianzi Teaching Award while others have studied abroad. Of the 800 faculty members, 41% have intermediate and senior professional titles (such as lecturer or professor) and 35% have masters or doctoral degrees.
International Profile
International cooperation and exchanges are very important for HUE . Each year, the university’s International Office recruits up to fourteen foreign teachers, more than most universities in Wuhan .
